Julie Barnes is a freelance writer and editor. Her work has been published in several publications across the country. She also writes articles, proposals, newsletters, website content and annual reports for local clients in the home building, construction and development industries.

After earning a business degree and spending several years in banking, Julie felt the need to change careers and follow a more creative pursuit. In 2007, she went back to school part-time to earn certificates in media communications and social media. While still spending her days at the bank, she started writing in her spare time and had her first article picked up by the Ottawa Citizen in 2008.

Growing up with a mother who worked as an interior decorator, an interest in interior design and décor was sparked at an early age. Julie loved visiting designer show homes, flipping through fabric samples and reconfiguring her bedroom furniture to find the perfect layout. As an adult, she had the opportunity to test her design and décor skills when she and her husband Josh purchased and renovated two condos in Ottawa. After two successful flips they moved to Saskatoon in 2011.  They are currently in the process of building their first home – and the combination of Julie’s interests and Josh’s background in construction will (hopefully) ensure a smooth and successful build, with minimal squabbling.

Julie’s life circumstances seem to slowly pull her west. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, she later spent five years in our nation’s capital before making her way to the prairies. It was during her last move that she got the motivation to leave banking behind and transition to a communications career. She worked for a communications agency for a year before launching her own writing business in 2012.

Julie is a member of IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) and is active on the Saskatoon chapter’s board as the membership co-chair. She’s also a proud supporter of New Hope Dog Rescue, the Saskatoon Fringe Festival and Global Neighbors Canada.
